Oh Aire and Calder
Dull dirty rivers
Smile Mona Lisa
Fire in the atmosphere

Blow Aire and Calder
Bleak grey melancholia
Go somewhere or other
Whisper to me on the tide

Between the here and now
Where the sky hits the ground
In faded splendour rise
Saw your reflection in the steel pile
Then realised it was mine

Roll like the thunder
Goole to Castleford
Then through the floodplains take me
Lie like love's big swollen eyes

Oh Aire and Calder
Life may come and go
Though time lasts forever
Luck was never on our side

Between the here and now
Where the sky hits the ground
In faded splendour rise
Saw your reflection in the steel pile
Then realised it was mine

Between here and now
When the smile hits a foul
In faded splendour rise
Saw your reflection in the steel pile
Then realised it was mine

The title is derived from the canal of the same name in Yorkshire. The video featured hot air balloons and a camera on a dog. The unauthorised 10-second editing of the intro by Nude boss Saul Galpern for the single version didn't sit too well with the band, who apparently went ballistic, with Richard notably calling Saul a "slimy little c***." Another of Ultrasound's grievances against Nude... see here for others.
